Rebellion is nigh in Matilda JR., a gleefully witty ode to the the anarchy of childhood and the power of imagination! This story of a girl who dreams of a better life and the children she inspires will have audiences rooting for the "revolting children" who are out to teach the grown-ups a lesson.

Matilda has astonishing wit, intelligence... and special powers! She's unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however – the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don't abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils' saving grace!

To make participation more accessible across the Wichita area, we are opening two program locations this season: Central (Asbury Church) and East (Hope Community Church). Families may audition and rehearse at the location that best fits their schedule and commute. Both casts will follow the same production plan and perform at Sunrise Center for the Performing Arts.

What to expect from shows

No theatre experience? No problem!

This may be your child's first time on stage or the next step in developing a lifelong passion. Either way, we want to help them discover their voice and build confidence in their skills.

Students thrive when they get to explore their love of musical theatre in a nurturing space. Amidst the diverse landscape of theatre, Foundations creates a safe environment centered on our Christian values.

Our goal is not to produce extravagant musicals, but to foster learning and personal growth.

Registration

  • Register your student at the registration link above.

  • Enrollment fee is due upon registration.

  • For every additional sibling that enrolls there will be $10 off the total (for example if you enroll 3 students your discount total will be $20)

Auditions

  • Auditions are held at the first rehearsal of the season.

  • Students are asked to prepare a brief song from either the provided list or a song of their choice. A dance audition video will be sent out in advance, which students will need to practice ahead of time to be prepared for auditions. They will present their audition pieces in front of the directors and alongside a select number of cast members in their audition group. No parents are allowed in the auditions.

  • Auditions are required, but everyone is given a part. Our mission is to help students build their theatre skills from the beginning. We require auditions to help students gain experience in the full musical theatre process. Auditions also help us to place students in a role that is suited to their strengths.

  • We work hard to create an encouraging and supportive environment where students can develop their skills and grow in the love of Christ. We know that for many students, this may be their very first audition, and our team is committed to being patient, gracious, and kind as students learn and grow.

Rehearsals

  • Drop-Off and pick-up: Students may be dropped off without a parent walking them inside. Parents of students ages 5–10 must come inside for pick-up.

  • What to bring: Bring a pencil, script, and dance shoes (if they have them), and snack or money for snacks. Wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes that allow for movement and dancing.

  • Snacks: A 15-minute snack break is built into each rehearsal, and students will bring their own. Please note: all snacks must be nut-free.

  • What to expect from rehearsals: Rehearsals are held weekly. During rehearsal, students rotate between dance, vocal, and blocking segments. Time is divided into one-hour and 45-minute rotations, with a 15-minute break. We work hard to keep students engaged and actively participating throughout rehearsal. Because our in-person rehearsal time is limited, we appreciate families helping students practice at home. We kindly ask that students practice at least four times during the week to support their growth and confidence.

  • Parent Participation: While rehearsals are closed to observers, parent volunteers are welcome and appreciated in our program. Volunteering is completely optional and offers a great way to support your child and our production. Opportunities may include helping with rehearsals, costumes, sets and props, meals, or backstage. No prior experience is needed, and roles are designed to be flexible and family-friendly.
